Barkworthies Goat Horn Chew Review

The lovely folks at Barkworthies sent Henry a Goat Horn Chew to review, and I couldn’t wait to see his reaction. He loves to gnaw bully sticks, and I knew he would relish a longer-lasting chew. Henry threw me for a loop, however, in a pretty comical way. Want to know how? Keep reading!

Barkworthies Goat Horn Chew

According to their website, all Barkworthies chews are completely digestible and contain no preservatives, chemicals, or additives. In addition, the Goat Horn Chew is a great source of keratin and a quality alternative to rawhide. My childhood dog Rory once needed surgery to remove an undigested piece of rawhide, and I certainly don’t want Henry to go through that!

When I first removed the Goat Horn Chew from the packaging, I could tell that it was high quality. The horn was smooth and almost polished, without any alarming sharp edges or discolorations. The packaging is simple, yet informative and easy to read. This medium-sized horn is about five inches long and two inches wide at its thickest point, with a smooth outer layer and a marrow center. If I were a dog, I would absolutely chew it. 

I saved the new treat for a Wednesday evening when my camera was fully charged and I could capture what I anticipated would be Henry’s unbridled glee. I envisioned him grabbing the chew from my hands, prancing off, and dutifully gnawing it all night while I peacefully edited photos and checked some items off my to-do list.

Ah, bliss. 

I presented the Goat Horn Chew to Henry, and, as expected, he was very intrigued. His tail wagged, he licked his chops, and he finagled himself into the best position to snatch it from my hand. Then, off he went!

Henry plopped the goat horn on the ground, sniffed it, and licked it inquisitively. Instead of greedily grabbing it with his paws and starting to chew, he picked the horn up and placed it on the floor in the crook of the couch.

You know that’s for chewing, right, Henry?

Then, he toted it to the apartment’s farthest point, near the front door, and shoved it into the corner.

You never hang out there, bud. What’s up?

It wasn’t until he started nosing imaginary dirt over the goat horn that I realized what was up: he was trying to bury it! Yes, he was doing a comically terrible job, but the Goat Horn Chew was so prized to Henry that he instinctually needed to hide it. 

In the past, Henry has needed to warm up to harder chews. Bully sticks and dental chews disappear within minutes, but he’s needed days or weeks to adjust to Nylabones or antlers before diving in. I suspected that the Barkworthies Goat Horn Chew would be the same and that some time in the future (probably the second I pressed “publish” on this post), Henry would “unbury” his goat horn and go to town. In the meantime, he continued moving it from place to place, carrying it with him like a toddler’s favorite stuffed animal. 

So far, I’ve found the Goat Horn Chew:

• On the floor in front of the couch. 

• In the far corner near the front door. 

• Next to the toy basket. 

• Wedged between my mattress and footboard. 

• Under a rug corner. 

• Under the kitchen table. 

• Between the basket of throw blankets and the wall. 

• On my bed, but not under the covers. 

• Next to the bed, on the floor. 

Clearly, Henry didn’t quite pass the “Chewing and Hiding Bones” portion of Doggie 101. 

After one week and two days of toting, licking, and sniffing, Henry finally decided to CHEW the Goat Horn! Of course, I didn’t have my camera readily available. Go figure. For the rest of the night, Henry gnawed away on my bed while I typed on the couch across the room.

Ah, bliss. 

The Takeaway

Thanks to my initially uncooperative tester, I cannot speak to the Barkworthies Goat Horn Chew’s durability or longevity at this moment, but I can attest that it is a high-quality product that any canine chewer would prize. After an evening of hard work and determination, Henry made only slight headway and there will still be a few nights of joyful gnawing in his future.
